Darren was born in London in 1968 and has over twenty years’ teaching experience. He studied at Reading University in England and obtained a B.A (Hons.) degree in 1993. He then enrolled on a Master’s degree course in International Business Economics at the University of the West of England and was there from 1993-94. After a year working in corporate banking in London, in 1995 he decided to change careers and studied teaching English as a foreign language at Bedford College, England. After that he has taught English to children and adults in England, Italy and Finland. He has spent the last 13 years teaching English in Finland, mostly business English to adult learners. He has taught over 400 language courses in Finland to probably over 1000 students which include both private and public sector clients including many company directors and CEO’s. From 2010-2016 Darren was the Area Head Trainer for one of Finland’s leading language training companies. He also worked at Summer schools for international students from 1996-2001 and was a Course Director for courses with around 100 students and 15 staff during the last two years of that period.
Darren also has a lot of experience of proofreading assignments during his 13 years in Finland. He has corrected many scholarly articles for university professors from Finland and abroad and has also been involved in correcting Phd. theses. In addition Darren has also done proofreading work for Finnish publisher Söderstöm and Co.
Darren has also been involved in many Finnish-English translation projects for the Private and Public Sector ranging from museum exhibit descriptions to curriculum vitae. He speaks Finnish fluently and achieved level 4 on the official Finnish test in 2009 as well as level C1 (written and spoken) on an AAC Global course in 2010.
Darren’s main hobby is chess. He has won county junior and senior championships in England and open and club championships in Finland. He is a member of Tammer-shakki chess club’s board and is responsible for the club’s junior activities and its women’s team. He has coached junior players in Finland and his own 10 year-old stepdaughter has won 5 Finnish Youth and Finnish School’s Championships and has played for the National Youth team. Darren is an International Chess Federation (FIDE) qualified coach (National Instructor) and was Manager of the Finland team at the European Youth Chess Championships in Batumi, Georgia in 2014 and Prague, Czech Republic in 2016.
